Providing Government Oversight

One of the core functions of Congress is oversight and making sure the government is always working for the best interests of the American people.

For two years, Democrats and the Biden administration didn’t have to answer to anyone or explain their missteps or outright failures. When House Republicans took the majority in 2022, we restored congressional oversight and immediately began pushing back against this administration and demanding transparency for the American people.

Our federal government and its agencies should be efficient and effective — and it should be held accountable when there is waste, fraud and abuse. Americans deserve a government that works for them — not against them.

Below are a few highlights of legislation I have supported to provide government oversight.

H.R. 277 — REINS Act — This legislation would reassert Congress’ legislative authority and prevent excessive overreach by the executive branch in the federal rulemaking process. It would require every new “major rule” proposed by federal agencies to be approved by both the House and Senate before going into effect. This legislation defines a “major rule” as any federal rule or regulation that may result in: an annual effect on the economy of $100 million or more; a major increase in costs or prices for consumers, individual industries, government industries, government agencies, or geographic regions; or significant adverse effects on competition, employment, investment, productivity, innovation, or the ability of U.S.-based enterprises to compete with foreign-based enterprises.

H.R.890 — Guidance Out Of Darkness Act — This legislation would require government agencies to post documents and information related to regulatory guidance on a single website. By centralizing agency guidance this legislation would improve transparency and streamline information for the American public and business owners who are trying to maintain compliance with federal regulations.

H.R. 1506 — Advisory Committees Free of ESG Act — This legislation would prohibit environmental, social, and governance (ESG) advisory committees from being created within the federal government. This legislation would also direct the Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA) to immediately terminate any such advisory committees if they are created.

H.R. 4563 — American Confidence in Elections Act —This legislation would improve election integrity by boosting voter confidence and encouraging states to implement common-sense election integrity reforms by removing federal policies that stand in their way. It would equip states with election integrity tools, implement election integrity reforms in Washington D.C., and protect political speech and donor privacy.
